Preparing Transformative Teachers for Emerging Democracies (TED)

How can internationalisation formats strengthen the professionalisation of teachers?

TED aims to transform teacher education in Kosovo by integrating equity-based practices, international collaboration, and democratic school development. Its goal is to empower teachers with democratic, international, and meta-reflective competencies. Kosovo’s education system faces challenges: traditional curricula and methods often fail to foster critical thinking and active citizenship, and do not adequately address diverse student needs in a globalized world. This limits the development of responsible youth who can contribute to Kosovo’s democracy. TED research project adopts a multi-method research design involving future and current teachers and educators to assess how democratic values are integrated into curricula, teaching, and school culture. As an intervention study, it explores how international collaboration in teacher education via blended learning can enhance democratic and international competencies, as well as reflection skills vital for transformation in emerging democracies. The project promotes cooperative curriculum development to embed democratic values and social cohesion in teacher education programming as well as international collaboration opportunities that improve competencies in innovative digital learning environments and transforming teacher education. The joint research will yield new insights and data on integrating democratic and meta-reflective competencies, supporting sustainable models that prepare teachers to nurture active democratic citizens.
